Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a meeting in Islamabad on 22nd December, 2022 regarding the promotion of solar energy in the country. The Prime Minister said necessary steps should be taken to promote the use of solar energy at the private level while maximum government buildings in the country should be converted to solar before the start of summer season. He said solarization should be done first in the buildings of the federal government in Islamabad capital territory and will be extended across the country later on.
The meeting was briefed that the federal cabinet has approved the framework for generating electricity from solar energy instead of expensive fuel.
AEDB is already working on development of a 600 MWp solar PV project at Muzaffargarh, Punjab for generation cheap electricity in substitution of expensive import fuel based generation. The competitive bidding process for the development of the said project will be initiated soon after the determination of benchmark tariff by NEPRA. AEDB has also been tasked to carry out the competitive bidding for solarization of public sector buildings on behalf of public sector entities. The competitive bidding process in this regard is planned to be initiated in early January, 2023.
